Meet Pete: Composer, Sound Designer, and Producer

Hello,

Hope you’re good!

OK, so first off, I think (re)introductions are in order. I haven’t done this sort of thing in a long, long time…

I’m Pete, and I’m a Composer, Sound Designer, and Producer, based in the lovely Sirhowy Valley - South Wales. My musical journey began over 35 years ago as a keyboard player, performing in various Rock, Progressive Rock, Metal, and cover bands. Influenced by iconic artists like T-Rex, ELO, Queen, ELP, and Pink Floyd, I've always immersed myself in the world of music and audio.

From Piano to Synthesizers

My fascination with music and sound started at the age of 7 when I discovered the piano and remember instantly falling in love with all the sounds and dynamics that it produced. As I grew older, I developed a ability to process music in a highly visual way. This led me into the exploration of keyboards and synthesisers. Jean Michel Jarre’s albums “Oxygene” and “Equinox” are the initial catalysts and responsible for igniting my passion for creating unique sounds and imagining new sound design possibilities. Rich atmospheric textures and transportive ambiances have always been a hallmark of my work.

Navigating the 90s Music Scene

During the early 90s, while many bands grappled with the Grunge explosion, I ventured into new avenues. With the rock bias prevailing, I delved deeper into electronic and ambient music. Armed with technical knowledge and an expanding arsenal of keyboards and sequencers, I sought out underground scenes. The John Peel Show became my trusted source for music discovery during that time.

Fusing Dark Ambience with Progressive Rock

My sound took shape—a fusion of Dark Ambience and Progressive Rock. Collaborating with talented musicians in South Wales, I recorded extensively in studios and live environments across the U.K. A standout moment was recording at the historic BBC Maida Vale Studios, where our music got airplay on the BBC Radio 1 Friday Rock Show in early 1992. The Little Angels had just finished their live set for Jackie Brambles’ lunchtime show before we stepped into the studio.

Embracing New Horizons

Life in a band continued until 2000 when I decided to explore emerging production technologies. Leaving the live music scene, I founded Jamyama Studios in 2010. Here, I create a distinct mix of license-ready production music, custom scores, and audio. From synth backbones to heavy orchestral riffs and melodic ambiences, my work thrives on discovery and progression. I’m unafraid to deconstruct, mix, and experiment—all while recognizing the importance of space. My goal? To enable stories to breathe and flourish, reaching out to audiences through captivating atmospheres.

Placements and Soundtracks

Recently, my music found a home on TF1 and TFX terrestrial channels in France. I’ve also contributed music and sound effects to local television, advertising, corporate videos, and online media.

A Light Bulb Moment in 2023

In January 2023, I seized an opportunity as a Freelance Union Learning Rep (ULR) with CULT Cymru—a pan-creative Union learning initiative for Wales-based creatives. The whole year opened up new windows of opportunity, and I created learning surveys to identify advantageous areas for others.

Fast Forward to 2024: A New Chapter

In 2024, exciting developments have unfolded in my creative journey. Let me share them with you:

This year, I took on the role of Regional Committee Member for Wales and the South West Musicians Union. Attending my first meeting, I’m eager to keep my ears to the ground and stay informed about the music industry. My goal is to serve music creators by advocating for their needs and contributing to the growth of our vibrant community.

Empowering Fellow Creatives

My mission: to support and promote continuous learning and development among fellow creatives. I believe that everyone should have access to the skills, knowledge, and training necessary to advance in their careers. To achieve this, I’ve started running workshops covering various aspects of Music Production. Soon, I’ll facilitate sessions on Intellectual Property, Publishing, and Songwriting, with more topics in the pipeline.

One-on-One Coaching and Mentoring Sessions

In addition to workshops, I’ll be offering personalised One-on-One Coaching and Mentoring sessions in music production. Whether it’s diving deep into production techniques or mastering the right mindset, I’m committed to helping artists develop their craft. By mid-2024, I plan to launch an online store where artists can access resources and tools to enhance their creative journey. I'll also be releasing a 'Sound Therapy' collection based of my library of field recordings.

Inspiration from the South Wales Valleys

Living amidst the natural beauty of the South Wales Valleys provides endless inspiration. Fresh air, green open spaces, and a natural compulsion to explore fuel my creativity.

I’ve always considered myself a “work in progress,” and every step I take is part of a long-term journey.

See you on the trail!
